Behind The Pots - Our Story
Fifth Element Pottery, a Community Interest Company (CIC), was born from a passion for creativity and community.
Nestled in the peaceful setting of Marcassie Farm, our studio blends the natural elements of earth, water, air, and fire to craft unique ceramic pieces. But it’s the fifth element—love—that truly defines our work.
Founded by Erik Lang, Fifth Element Pottery is more than just a pottery studio; it’s a place where creativity meets connection, and each handmade piece reflects the heart and care that goes into its creation. Through our pottery classes and workshops, we bring people together, nurturing both artistic expression and community.
The Therapeutic Power of Pottery: Reducing Stress and Anxiety
Research has shown that engaging in art, particularly pottery, can significantly reduce stress and anxiety.
The tactile nature of working with clay helps individuals focus on the present moment, promoting mindfulness and relaxation. Pottery’s repetitive and soothing actions, like shaping clay on a wheel, have been found to lower cortisol levels, which can ease stress and create a calming effect.
This hands-on, creative process offers a therapeutic outlet, making it a powerful tool for mental well-being and stress relief.
Read more about the studies which have shown that clay therapy can reduce biological indicators of anxiety and depression in teenagers and adults; or a 2023 randomised trial of high-school-aged girls in Hong Kong found that subjects who created clay works with their hands had reduced levels of the stress hormone cortisol in their hair.
Meet The Potter
Erik Lang
Erik is the founder of Fifth Element Pottery, where he combines his love for pottery with a deep commitment to community and mental well-being. With a masters in Social Psychology and Communication, he brings both artistic expertise and an understanding of human behaviour to his work.
Erik has been an apprentice for several years at Blackhills Pottery with John Christie, a master potter whose craft is defined by his passion for wood firing and ash glazes. Erik was deeply inspired by John’s dedication to the unpredictable, transformative nature of soda wood-fired pottery. This experience sparked Erik’s appreciation for the elemental connection and artistry inherent in the process.
Erik turned his passion into a purpose-driven venture, creating a space at Marcassie Farm where creativity, education, and connection thrive. Through his pottery, he emphasises the importance of the fifth element—the love and care that goes into each handcrafted piece, forging a strong bond between the artist, the art, and the community.
